When and if the dentist ever tells you that you have gingivitis, don’t freak out. While gingivitis in adults might sound like a scary word, and it can be, the disease is very manageable. Especially when it is caught in the early stages and the outline for treatment is followed. There are a few different options that one can take with treating gingivitis. What options you can take should be discussed with your dentist before they are started, just to make sure they are safe and plausible solutions to the gingivitis in your mouth.

Home Remedies

With the green movement and people trying to be more eco-friendly, home remedies are being sought out more and more for cures to common medical problems. If your dentist okays it, you can try some of these at home. All or none of them can be combined with traditional methods of treating gingivitis.

Baking soda – you can mix baking soda and a little bit of water to form a toothpaste. Once the baking soda hits the mouth, it fizzes. The fizzing action loosens up the food particles and the bacteria in the mouth, causing them to be brushed away from the teeth and gums.

Peppermint oil extract – Oil from the peppermint leaves has been shown to have positive effects on the gum tissue. A drop of oil can be added to toothpaste or water to rinse or brush the teeth with. Peppermint oil can reduce the redness and swelling around the teeth and gums.

Salt water gargle – Mixing a small amount of salt with warm water and then swishing can also be used to rid the mouth of bacteria. The saline mixture gets between the teeth and loosens up any particles that might have been left behind from brushing.

Change of Lifestyle

Gingivitis in adults is very common, but it’s shouldn’t be accepted as a normal part of aging.  Lifestyle choices are a huge influence in causing gingivitis.

One other option you might not have thought about in your combat with gingivitis is diet. Change your diet to include more healthy foods and eliminate the bad ones. Processed food and sweets brings more bacteria in to your mouth and the bacteria are what causes plaque to buildup and then gingivitis can begin. The less sugar you consume, the healthier your teeth and gums will remain.
